Canadian Banks  

The Canadian Banking scene is dominated by six large banks


TD - Toronto Dominion Bank   - TD Bank - is the second largest bank in Canada but has become a truly North American bank. It has branches across Canada and the eastern US from Maine to Florida. There are approximately the same number of branches in each of Canada and the US. It specializes in customer service, with longer banking hours and tries to minimize customer waiting time.

BMO - Bank of Montreal - Bank of Montreal - branches across Canada and the US. The US branches are mainly around the Chicago area under the Harris Bank name.They have discount and full service brokerages as well as investment bank services. This bank has also purchased banks in Wisconsin.

CIBC - Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce    Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce has branches across Canada. It has a full service investment service as well as a discount brokerage. CIBC has a large credit card business. 

National Bank of Canada    - National Bank of Canada has branches across Canada with the majority in Quebec. This is the 6th largest bank in Canada.  

RBC - Royal Bank of Canada   - Royal Bank  also known as RBC,  is the largest of the Canadian Banks. It also maintains both full service and discount brokerages and a large investment dealer business. It is expanding its investment bank business around the world.

Bank of Nova Scotia   - Scotia Bank - branches across Canada as well as branches in Latin America and China. This bank is the most international of Canada's banks. It is the third largest bank in Canada by deposits and market capitalization. It has over 2000 branches in over 50 countries. 


Smaller Banks and Credit Unions

Canadian Western Bank  - Canadian Western Bank. This bank operates in Western Canada. 

Desjardins   - Desjardins financial group consists of credit unions in eastern Canada as well as insurance and other financial services. They are actually quite a large credit union and have a large market share in Quebec and parts of Ontario.

HSBC   - HSBC financial group's Canadian website. HSBC is one of the largest financial institutions in the world with around 8000 offices in 88 countries around the world. 

Laurentian Bank  - Laurentian Bank is a smaller bank concentrated in Quebec but with branches in other provinces. 

Meridian Credit Union - Meridian Credit Union - based in Ontario. 

National Association for Credit Unions in Canada   - the national association for credit unions in Canada. 

President's Choice Financial    - President's choice financial - This is a virtual bank that is operated in partnership with CIBC. They have low service charges for their accounts and is quite popular. Account holders with PC Financial can use CIBC's ATMs without any extra service charges.
